Wed 8/14  First official day for all students; Name tents, Handed out books; Ppt with border problem, perspective (several perspective sheets); SOAR, why advanced algebra; 90-10 grading; formative clicker “quiz;” Handed out info to give to parent; handed out 1/2 sheet to be signed at home; handed out assignment (with answers included): Read 1.1 and 1.2; do pg 15 #3, 4, 8, 25, 27, 30, 36, 39, 40, 68, 69, 70, 72, 75
Thur 8/15 Warm-up (focus on “negative” issues); used clickers to post four m/c problems; answered questions on the hmwk; turned in hmwk; “Solve Me Maybe” video, solved equations at the board; not enough time for roundtable activity with solving equations…just did the Cookies problem as a class; handed out assignment (with answers included again): Read 1.3 do pg 21 #2, 5, 10, 13, 18, 20, 31, 38, 39, 48.

Mon 8/19 Warm-up (various absolute value problems to set the stage for today); compared Friday’s hmwk and addressed questions; Turned in hmwk; Mr. Stevens addressed issues from the 1.3 assignment. Talked about online textbook (link is here ); talked about the resource called Khan academy. Moved on….Notes and examples and board work for 1.5 absolute value equations (click here for notes from 2012-13 school year) AND notes and examples and partner coch for absolute value inequalities (click here for notes from 2012-13 school year). Read 1.5 do pg36 #1, 4, 5, 7, 16, 20, 22, 26, 46; Worked out solutions for the 1.5 assignment are here; Review sheet handed out for tomorrow’s test…..worked out solutions for the review here; Mr. Stevens will be in B107 after school for help and at 7:40 tomorrow morning for help! The test is tomorrow over 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.
Tue 8/20 Final questions before the test (used the partner coach as a resource and Mr. Stevens answers for it); Chap 1 test; 2.1 preview packet to fill out by tomorrow; Also fill out the student inventory
Wed 8/21 Hartman took half the class and worked on: guess my function and CBR (motion ranger) graphs….Stevens took half the class and went over the preview packet. (Then we switched). QQT with functions; GRAPH video to “teach” slope-intercept form. Board work. do 2.1 pg 59 #12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 36, 38, 53 and do pg. 67 #1, 4, 6, 11, 16, 20,25, 26, 66 and graph  y+3=-2(x-2)
Thur 8/22 Warm up 1 (UNL cost problem); Warm up 2 (matching sheet); Tests back; Talked about how to graph an equation in standards form and point slope form; Talked about writing the equation of a line from a table, from a graph, given a point and slope, and given two points. Fri 8/23 Warm up (important “perpendicular” / point-slope….etc… problem); DCA in the computer lab!!!  Finish last night’s hmwk.
Mon 8/26 Warm-up (several learning target problems at the boards); looked at the basic graph of y = abs x (used a table to generate the V shape); Talk about how to graph an absolute value function; Used the calculator to discover the “a,” “h,” and “k” transformations. Looked at a couple specific examples of listing the transformations / graphing; Assignment: finish up the packet; Do the worksheet on 2.5/2.6; Worked out solutions for tonight’s 2.5/2.6 hwmk: click here   Remember the test is Wednesday
Tue 8/27 Warm-up (graphing an abs value equation); Looked at Geogebra; Board work with graphing abs. value equations; Reviewed the boundary point method for solving/graphing an abs. value inequalities (only in the variable of “x”)…THEN used the boundardy point method to graph linear inequalities and abs. value inequalities (in the variables of “x” and “y”) Read 2.7 do pg 104 #1, 5, 15, 42, 48 and work on the review sheet (click here for the worked out ipad video for the review) Test is tomorrow! Some turned in last night’s worksheet. Those who turned in the big 2.1-2.4 packet from last week got it back today with a worked out solution key to go with it.

Fri 8/30 Students compared hmwk; Warm up (solve an application with a system of inequalities); Tests back; All I Do is Solve…you tube video; Notes and examples on 3.2 (solving systems using the elimination and substitution methods)…used the online text as the resource…again showing examples of where “help” can be found; forum rotation partner work; Read 3.2 do pg 128 #1, 3, 8, 9, 18, 20, 24, 36 and then do 30, 35 and then do 15, 16, 17  Click here here for a helpful video for elimination and substitution

Wed 9/4 Warm up (Clicker NeSA problem related to chapter 2); Had a discussion on yesterday’s level challenge and last Friday’s forum rotation partner sheet; answered questions before the test; Chap 3 test; reading sheets for 5.1 and 5.2 for hmwk (also do 5.1 pg 241 #1, 2, 3, 11, 45, 46, 47 and 5.2 pg 248 #1, 3, 10, 28); Retest is next Monday
Thur 9/5 We went over the basics of 5.1 and 5.2. Remember the key is (-b/2a). Spent half of the class reviewing at the boards for the cumulative 1-3 retest, which will be on Monday. Hmwk: start working on the 5.1-5.3 graphing sheet.
Fri  9/6 Discussed graphing the vertex form of a quadratic equation y=a(x-h)^2+k; Chap 3 tests back; Practice problems to review for the cumulative retest…for MONDAY….1. Thur   9/12 Factoring board work; notes and examples on solving quadratics (ax^2+bx+c=0) using 3 methods: A) Factoring and the zero product property, B) Square roots (when there is not “bx” term), and C) Graphing (and finding the zeros). No homework due to the homecoming game.
Fri 9/13 Warm up; Review of yesterday’s 3 methods to solve, Partner coach solving activity; Time to work on the assignment we were going to give yesterday (but held off due to Homecoming); new assignment: little 1/2 sheet with 11 new problems for the weekend
Mon 9/16 Warm up ( solve (x+3)^2=9 ); Board work with adding/subtr/and multiplying “i” problems; Hartman talked about our current state of prepping for the NeSA/ACT tests; clicker review problems (based on the DCA); established the need for “i”; a few notes on complex numbers: hmwk; pg 278 #1,3, 5, 11, 13, 14, 29, 34, 36, 40, 41, 44, 46
Tue 9/17 Warm up (pg 302 #14); discussed issues on the graded homework…especially solving 4(x+3)^2=32, gave time to work on “i” problems (used a chapter 5 checkpoint sheet), reviewed purpose of “i,” 5 different ways to solve a quadratic, and how to use a textbook, “puzzle” activity with completing the square. Hmwk: 1. Finish up last night’s pg 278 hmwk; 2. work on missing assignments; revise hmwk that has been handed back. 3. Work on the chapter 5 checkpoint… (click here for video help).    4. Wed 9/18 Big day on completing the square and solving with completing the square; also looked converting standard form into vertex form; finished with the “proof” of the quadratic formula. Turned in the pg 278 hmwk and any missing/revised hmwk. Hmwk tonight: BEGIN to work on Read 5.7 do pg 285 #7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 28, 31 also continue to work on the chapter 5 checkpoint; the video link is posted in yesterday’s log.
Thur 9/19 Chap 5 Test is FRIDAY; Finished up the chapter…The Quad Song; Notes on the Quadratic Formula / Discriminant; Roundtable; Closure sheet to the chapter; Work on a few quadratic formula problems: Pg 293 #3, 7, 13, 32, 35, 42, 56; Work on the chap 5 review (click here for video help for levels 1&2 and click here for video help for levels 3-6).
Fri 9/20 NeSA 5 and 16; Chap 5 test; Work on the 6.1 preview sheet for Monday
Mon 9/23 NeSA 9; Posted hmwk answers from 6.1 preview sheet; notes and information on polynomials, classification of polynomials; add/subt/mult of poly (including box method); end behavior; Note sheet on end behavior….Hmwk: Finish the note sheet on end behavior and 8 problems; finish up the preview sheet from the weekend
Tues 9/24 QQT with classifying polynomials, turned in the assingment from Friday (6.1 preview sheet); more discussion about end behavior; Notes on 6.2 sketching graphs (looked at zeros, factors, x-intercepts…and….standard form….and end behavior….and y-intercepts….and putting the whole thing together). Practice problems and board work problems; Start working on the packet, finish up the end behavior note/work sheet
Wed 9/25 Warm up (special factoring); QQT (board) activity with end behavior; Chap 5 tests back; moved on to long division (6.3); notes and examples (and talked about…if there is a remainder of 0, then its a factor!!!) Continue working on the worksheet from Tuesday; Read 6.3 and do pg 324 #1, 3, 5, 37, 38; then 9 and 10
Thurs 9/26 Warm up (long division problems on a notesheet); talked about dividing when a “term” is missing (filler 0 needed); NeSA 4/14 clicker problems, more work with special factoring; board work: special factoring, long division, and graphing. Thu 11/14 Started at the boards reviewing 8.1-8.2; began looking at 8.3 (logarithms); two rounds of QQT in the forum with logs (rewriting and then evaluating); Time to start the homework: Do pg 450 #7-9, 15-20, 50, 53-57….then turned in the homework (and older homework) and exchanged for the QUIZ….yes the pink quiz covering 8.1-8.2…good news…help is available–Watch the video (click here) that goes over the quiz….

W / Th / F Thanksgiving Break
Mon 12/2 Notes and examples on direct/inverse/joint/combined variation. Basically FOUR steps to follow: 1. Identify which type you need to use and write down the generic type. 2. Substitute in the “given” information and solve for “k” (the constant of variation…which needs to be in every problem). 3. Re-write the equation…this time subbing in the actual “k” value….this is considered the MODEL. And 4. Use the model to do a “new” problem…there will be more information in each problem. Do pg 74 #18, 20, 24, 28 and do pg 491 #2, 4, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 26, 34, 53. It is critical for students to keep up these next 3 weeks. Chap 8 tests were handed back. EXTRA CRED opportunity was handed out (due by next Monday). Chap 9 test is planned for next Tuesday
